Passenger traffic
A portrait of a sea passenger
The passengers on the international cruisers are naturally coming to the Baltic Sea to spend their holiday. In contrast, only 26% of the foreign visitors arriving with the liner traffic are on holiday. Other important reasons for travelling included work (33%, particularly from Estonia to Finland) and visits to friends or relatives (25%). Source: TAK Rajatutkimus 2016 border survey, in Finnish)
Sea passengers travelling through the Port of Helsinki are estimated to bring as much as 805 million euros annually to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area (Port of Helsinki impact assessment 2016), when taking into account the foreign and domestic liner traffic passengers and the international cruise passengers. Passengers spend money on shopping, accommodation, advance payments, restaurants and cafés, transport and entertainment. In addition to the money they spend, visitors bring life, fresh new flavour and a taste of other cultures to the Metropolitan Area.
